Police: Fridley Man Causes $5K Worth Of Damage During 'Meth Rage'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Fridley man is facing property damage and assault charges after going into a "meth rage" earlier this month.

Charles Dale Otterness, 48, faces one count of first-degree criminal damage to property and one count of fourth-degree assault.

According to the criminal complaint, on March 1 the Fridley Police Department responded to a call of a man, later identified as Otterness, that was out of control and damaging property in the 160 block of Gibraltar Road.

The caller was Otterness' mother and she told police that she thought her son may be armed with a bow and arrow.

Upon arrival, the homeowner, Otterness' father, told police that Otterness was in a "meth induced rage."

Otterness' father told police Otterness had been in the unattached garage for most of the day. He had become upset and was yelling about the FBI. Otterness' father said Otterness was also yelling about being watched.

According to the criminal complaint, Otterness then started throwing objects at his father's car. He also began throwing things at two of the neighbor's cars.

In addition to the two cars, Otterness damaged a window, a storm door, a gas grill, a weed cutter, a 26-inch TV, a ground lamp post, and an HP computer tower.

Police said the estimated cost of the damaged property was $5,750.

When a second officer arrived on the scene, he found Otterness sitting at a piano and chanting to himself.

According to the criminal complaint, Otterness saw the officer and told him to get out. Otterness then jumped on the officer and attempted to hit him multiple times.

Police said Otterness also tried to bite the first officer on the scene.

Otterness was eventually subdued after he was Tasered three times.
