Police: Drunk Driver Flees, Car Sets On Fire
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man is custody after allegedly driving drunk and fleeing police officers in Cottage Grove, Minn. Saturday.
According to Cottage Grove police, officers responded to a call around 1 p.m. of an elderly male driving over a curb and hitting a rock in the 7100 block of 80th Street.
The caller told police that they believed the driver was intoxicated, and that the car was now heading northbound on Highway 61.
Police caught up with the SUV near 70th Street, noting that the vehicle was losing rubber from a flat tire.
They attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver would not comply.
The driver then turned onto Glen Road in the wrong direction.
As officers continued to chase the driver, they noticed there were flames under the SUV and called out.
The driver finally stopped and officers were able to pull him from the car, unharmed. Police said he was intoxicated.
Newport Fire responded to the call and were able to extinguish the flames. No one else was injured during the chase or fire.
They transported him to the Cottage Grove Police Department where he is being processed for a DWI and felony fleeing.
Police are still trying to identify the man as his wallet burned up in the fire.
