Police: Boy, 5, Dies After Being Hit By Car On Halloween

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 5-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a car in Minneapolis while trick-or-treating on Halloween night.

Minneapolis police say the child was hit shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of Memorial Parkway and Knox Avenue North. When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found the boy trapped under a car, with bystanders helping to get him out.

Derik Newman was hosting a Halloween party when the crash happened just outside his home.  His guests were the ones who tried to help the boy.

"Some of the adults ran out here and one of them helped in lifting up the car so that someone could pull the child out from the car," Derik Newman said.

Tire marks left on the roadway and the grass nearby show the point where a car lost control Halloween night.  Police say the driver tried to avoid the little boy as he crossed the street.

"The car did take evasive maneuvers but did end up striking the child, anyway.  The child was trapped under the car," John Elder of the Minneapolis Police Department said.

"It's just tough you can't stop thinking about it and thinking about what that poor family is going through," Newman said.

The victim was just 5 years old and witnesses saw him still dressed in his Spiderman costume.

"We believe, at this time, that the child was out trick-or-treating.  That child was out with adults and but did enter the roadway," Elder said.

First responders quickly rushed the boy to the hospital, but his injuries were too severe.

"There was just nothing you could do, you know," Newman said.

"At the end of day, this is so tragic," Elder said.

The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police say. They added that drugs and alcohol don't appear to be a factor in the incident.

The boy's name has not yet been released.
