Police: 2-Year-Old Pulled From Brooklyn Center Apt. Fire Dies

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 2-year-old boy is dead after being pulled from a Brooklyn Center apartment fire late Friday morning, according to police.

According to Brooklyn Center Police Commander Brian Peters, the report of the fire came in at 11:26 a.m.at the Twin Lakes Apartments. When police officers first arrived, it was so smoky and hot that they couldn't enter for a while.

Peters said a young man, who hasn't been identified, is the brother of the 2-year-old and had jumped out of a second story window to avoid the fire. He then told fire crews that the child was inside.

Firefighters located the child, who was taken to North Memorial Medical Center. There, the child was pronounced dead of fire related injuries. He's been identified by family as Keoni Holt.

Holt's grandfather Dennis Williams said all he can do is try and stay strong for the rest of his loved ones.

"He was a fun child--very, very active," he said. "Hopefully, we can make some sense of all of this."

Peters said the fire appears to have started in the living room. There are six apartments in the building and two others were impacted. All residents are currently unable to enter their homes.

The Red Cross may help the other families. Metro Transit buses were brought to keep people warm.

The young man and Holt appear to have been the only ones home, Peters said.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The manner of Holt's death is pending as authorities investigate further.
