Police: Suspect Shot Dead During Attempted Robbery In Brooklyn Park

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Brooklyn Park police say they believe a man with a legal permit to carry shot and killed a would-be armed robber in Brooklyn Park Monday night.

Police say the shooting happened at 8 p.m. at the end of a driveway in the 7500 block of Imperial Drive.

The would-be robber, 20, then ran across the street and died.

Brooklyn Park Deputy Police Chief Mark Bruley said he cannot remember the last time someone with a legal permit to carry shot and killed someone who was committing a crime.

He also stressed that their investigation is still in its early stages, and the Hennepin County Crime Lab is assisting.

"Responding officers did locate … an adult male, 20 years of age, deceased in a parking lot," Bruley said.

The permit holder told police the man tried to rob him at gunpoint at the end of this driveway. Police say witnesses are backing his story.

"That does appear [to be] what occurred," Bruley said. "We have recovered two individual firearms from the scene."

Police at this point are not releasing the name of the deceased. They are also not releasing the name or any information about the permit holder

They will turn over their investigation to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, who will determine if the shooting was justified or if there will be any charges.
