Pence, Kaine Face Off In 1st And Only VP Debate

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It was a hotter-than-expected political event in Virginia Tuesday night.

The candidates for vice president mixed it up in their lone debate before the election on Nov. 8. Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine aggressively challenging the qualifications -- and controversial statements -- of the person at the top of each other's ticket.

Only 4 out of 10 voters could name the candidates for vice president before Tuesday night. Mike Pence and Tim Kaine went a long way in this debate to boost that number.

There was a Minnesota connection in tonight's debate during a tough discussion of criminal justice reform and unrest in minority communities: Kaine called last summer's shooting death of Philando Castille by Falcon Heights police an example of race-based institutional bias.
