Ovarian Cancer Walk Draws 3,500 People

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - More than 3,500 people took part in one of Minnesota's biggest races Saturday.

The HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer Walk and Run was held in Edina.

The event raises money to benefit research funding and programs by the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, or MOCA.

One out of 72 women in this country will get ovarian cancer sometime in her life.

The goal is to create an early detection test -- and a cure.

"MOCA, over the last few years, has raised $5 million dollars," Sen. Amy Klobuchar said. "My job is to make sure the National Institutes of Health continues to perform the research and is funded as we get closer and closer to a cure."

The organization awarded more than $660,000 to Minnesota ovarian cancer researchers this year, setting a new record.
