Once A Gophers Quarterback, Adam Weber Returns As Coach
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Gophers added a veteran quarterback before spring practice, kind of. Adam Weber has returned as a graduate assistant, ready to make a new name in his football career as a coach.
He is back to here. Here for Adam Weber was on a football field at Mounds View High School, where he was the man and the leader. At the University of Minnesota, he was the man and the leader. He started every game for four years.
In so doing, he also found out he loved the game enough he wanted to one day coach it.
"It's always kind of been there, always kind of been in the back of my mind and for so long I've been pursuing playing the sport that it took me a little while to actually think about or contemplate what it would be to be a coach," Weber said.
So he is back with the Gophers as a graduate assistant, working with the quarterbacks and bringing credibility to the program.
"Having been a four-year starter for the Gophers and worn the uniform and understands being a local kid and the pressure involved with that, but also being able to get out there and be a pro football player and have those experiences," Offensive Coordinator Matt Limegrover said.
Sit with him at a coaches convention and you can see he's now understanding what it really means to be a coach, the time and the commitment.
"It's a little different than playing, being on the other side of things, seeing the operations of everything and how things are organized as a program," Weber said.
What he's learning is that one day he would like to run his own program as a head coach. That football dream is just beginning.
"That is my goal. I love the sport, I love the idea of leadership, of being a leader of a program and of being the face of a program, things like that. Being able to mold it the way you want to," Weber said.
His priority is working with redshirt junior quarterback Mitch Leidner. He's the incumbent quarterback who can always use a veteran quarterback's perspective.
Weber and the Gophers will play their annual spring game Saturday afternoon at TCF Bank Stadium.
