UPDATE (Sept. 22, 2024) —Jonathan Angeles-Sanchez pleaded guilty on Sept. 19, 2024, to second-degree assault. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 20, 2024.


NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. — An 18-year-old man was shot in the northern Twin Cities suburb of New Brighton Thursday, authorities said. As of Friday, the Ramsey County Attorney's Office has formally charged Jonathan Angeles-Sanchez, 24, of New Brighton with felony second-degree assault.

The suspect shot the man in the back on the 200 block of Old Highway 8 Northwest, according to the city's Department of Public Safety.  

According to the statement of probable cause, officials say a witness saw a man in a blue hoodie walk up behind the victim. The witness then heard a pop shortly thereafter. Authorities believe the man in the blue hoodie was Angeles-Sanchez. The suspect shot the man in the back on the 200 block of Old Highway 8 Northwest, according to the city's Department of Public Safety.

The victim was taken to Hennepin Healthcare and his condition is unknown.

Old Highway 8 was closed between County Road E and Eighth Avenue Northwest as authorities investigated the scene.
