N.D. Health Department Receives 14 Reports Since February
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Health Department is urging people to make sure their vaccinations are up to date after an outbreak of mumps.
The agency has received 14 reports of mumps since Feb. 24. Eight of them have come from Ward County.
Both young and old have been affected — the age range of the cases is 14 years to 86 years.
Mumps is a viral illness best known for the puffy cheeks and swollen jaw that it causes as a result of swollen salivary glands. It's generally a mild illness but it can cause complications such as deafness and brain inflammation. Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite and swollen salivary glands.
