NEXT Weather: Winds should settle down this evening, with light snow returning Wednesday
MINNEAPOLIS — While other parts of the country (some not so far away from here) are hunkering down for potentially major snow totals, Minnesota is in a state of relative quiet. But that quiet does come with some of the coldest temperatures that we've seen this season so far.
WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer says the wind, which picked up Tuesday, will settle down this evening, and the Twin Cities metro area looks to get a break from the snow.
That break in the snow should last until later in the day Wednesday, when a storm moving across from the north could bring scant amounts.
"It doesn't look like much," Shaffer said, "but it could create slick spots again."
Thursday is our only hope of catching a peek of sunshine. It will be mostly cloudy, but there is a chance.
There will be one more shot at snow between Friday and Saturday, with a couple of inches of accumulation possible in the metro. Shaffer says the main core will once again likely miss the metro area.
Over the weekend, the cold will move in quickly, with single-digit highs, below-zero lows and intense wind chills. A NEXT Weather Alert is in effect for Saturday due to the cold. Sunshine will remain limited through the weekend.
Next week looks to see the cold holding on.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says there were 141 crashes Tuesday morning, 13 with injuries. There were also 72 vehicle spinouts and four jackknifed semis. Most of the crashes occurred in southern and west-central Minnesota.
