MINNEAPOLIS -- After hitting the 70s on Monday, the Twin Cities crossed another temperature threshold on Tuesday.

The high of 81 was well above average for this time of year, which is in the mid-50s. And the 80s will remain for the rest of the work week.

Wednesday will be even warmer -- in fact, the metro may surpass its record daily high of 83 degrees, which was set in 1931.

Thursday and Friday will feature highs in the low 80s, before showers and thunder roll in late Friday evening, ushering in cooler temps.

Over the weekend, expect wetter, cooler weather, with rain possible both Saturday and Sunday and highs in the 40s and 50s. 

Highs will remain in the 50s to start out next week.
