MINNEAPOLIS – It's not even October yet, but northern Minnesota got a taste of winter Tuesday morning when snowflakes fell in Ely and the Gunflint Trail.

Just a week ago, temperatures topped 90 degrees in parts of the state. But overnight, most Minnesotans will see the season's first freeze.

Snowflakes fall in northern Minnesota

The Twin Cities is under a frost advisory Tuesday night, with a freeze warning for some counties north of the metro and western Wisconsin.

Temperatures will drop into the mid-30s overnight, and widespread frost is likely by Wednesday morning, including in the Twin Cities.

The rest of Wednesday will be slightly warmer and sunny. A bonafide warming trend starts Thursday, with temps climbing into the 70s by Friday.
