National NAACP Leader Meets With Community After Castile Shooting
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- The leader of the nation's oldest and most well-known civil rights organization is in Minnesota on Sunday.
NAACP National President and CEO Cornell Brooks spoke at Progressive Baptist Church in St. Paul, late Sunday afternoon. He wanted an opportunity to meet with community members following the death of Philando Castile.
Brooks expressed concern about the way police officers interact with people of color. He also had a chance to meet with Governor Dayton at the church.
"We have a racial profiling law that was passed in this state with the active support of the NAACP that was subsequently weakened. We are looking for that law to be strengthened," Brooks said. "This is a moment for people to wake up and pay attention. We cannot have this discussion over and over again."
Brooks says Castile's death is a tragedy for his family, but it also has implications for businesses and colleges that are trying to recruit people of color from other states.
