Mpls. Public Schools To Offer 1st Ever Spring Break Academy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) will offer its first-ever Spring Break Academy as part of an effort to reduce the learning gap and increase student achievement, Superintendent Dr. Bernadeia Johnson announced Tuesday night.

Johnson says the academy is especially important due to the five to seven days students missed this year due to extreme weather conditions.

The five-day academy will give students more instructional time and opportunities to catch up – or accelerate – in class work.

"This academy is a breakthrough step in our responsiveness to raising student achievement," Johnson said. "We are excited to try something new that has the potential to grow into a program that could support learning during other school breaks."

The parents of students who qualify for the academy will be notified by MPS.

MPS also announced a proposal last night to appropriate $1 million of the FY15 integration budget to expand learning academies for future spring and winter breaks.

Teachers will receive a $2,000 stipend to teach over break.
