Mpls. Parks And Rec Close Outdoor Skating Rinks Due To Warm Weather

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is warning everyone to be cautious if they plan to go out on the ice.

Thanks to our warmer weather, ice on a number of lakes has thinned considerably.

Three vehicles have broken through the ice over the past week on Lake Minnetonka and Lake Nokomis.

No one was hurt.

The sheriff's office said recent warm temperatures and pressure from heavy slush is causing ice to deteriorate and become unstable on several lakes in Hennepin County.

The warm weather also forced the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to close all outdoor ice rinks.

Crews will work to get them back open as soon as possible, once colder temperatures return.
