Mother, 15-Month-Old Shot In South Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges is calling the shooting of a mother and her 15-month-old daughter "unthinkable."

The two victims were shot near Peavey Park in south Minneapolis around 2 p.m. Thursday. The mother, who is in her 20s, and her daughter were taken to a local hospital. They are in stable conditions.

Police say they were innocent and not the gunman's intended target.

"It's unthinkable that a mother and her 15-month-old would be shot in Minneapolis while simply walking down the street," Hodges said. "I am outraged that this took place in our city and in our community. We as a community must continue to vehemently reject this kind of violence and channel our outrage into preventing the factors that lead us down this path. Right now the police department is doing everything possible to apprehend the shooter."

Police and K-9 teams are searching the area for more evidence.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau also said that this kind of violence has to stop.

"We have additional weapons investigators out this summer," she said. "We have additional patrols out this summer all trying to get ahead of what's happening that you're seeing on the streets today."
