MNfusion: Hennepin Theatre Trust Announces 2016 – 2017 Season
The Hennepin Theater Trust announced the shows that will make up its 2016 – 2017 theater season Tuesday night.
For the coming season, HTT will be brining 11 shows to its four stages at the Orpheum, Pantages, State and New Century theaters. The lineup is complete with critically acclaimed classic and modern musicals.
The season opens with "Cabaret."
The Kander and Ebb musical, which later inspired the Bob Fosse film starring Liza Minnelli, is set in the iconic Kit Kat Club in Berlin. Amid the political turmoil of the early 1930s, Kander and Ebb tell the story of British cabaret singer Sally and her relationship with young American writer, Cliff. The show opens on Oct. 18 at the Orpheum. It will run through Oct. 23.
Following this classic musical is the 2015 Tony Award winner for best play, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." The show, which won four other Tony awards, opens Nov. 29 also at the Orpheum.
Of course, HTT couldn't showcase the best play without also showing the 2015 Tony Award winner for best musical, "Fun Home." This modern musical shares the story of Alison as she moves through life and learns more about her parents and her childhood. "Fun Home" opens on Dec. 13 and runs through Dec. 18.
In 2017, "The Bodyguard," "Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I," "Matilda The Musical" and "Wicked" come through on their U.S. Tours.
As with each season, there will be some special and limited performances this next season.
As part of their collaboration with Theater Latte Da, HTT will be presenting "Sweeney Todd- The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
The nationally renowned director Peter Rothstein will return to present his celebrated production of the Sondheim musical. The dark show tells the story of an exiled London barber who is seeking vengeance against his town. The show runs March 1 through 26 at the Pantages Theater.
For its 20th anniversary season, "Rent" comes to Minneapolis June 6 through 11. The 1996 rock musical tells the story of seven struggling artists in 1990s New York City, with messages that still resound in today's world.
Beloved "Mamma Mia" also returns to the stage and the popular "Motown the Musical" finishes out the season with a five-day run in July.
