MN Contests Safety Violations At St. Peter Security Hospital

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Department of Human Services is contesting citations it received earlier this month for workplace safety violations at the state's largest hospital for people considered mentally ill and dangerous.

The state office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a $63,000 fine for violations from May through July at Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter. OSHA imposed a January deadline to resolve the issues

Minnesota Public Radio News reports hospital executive director Carol Olson said in a memo to staff that the administration has taken steps to reduce workplace violence. Olson says the hospital opened an admissions unit and added cameras and other equipment to improve safety.

OSHA reported 102 staff injuries from assaults this year, compared to 78 last year.
