Minnetonka Man Critical After Being Shot By 15-Year-Old Son
MINNETONKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- A Minnetonka man is in critical condition after he was shot in the face by his 15-year-old son.
Police were called to a home on the 5400 block of Byscane Way at about 5 p.m. Monday after reports of an explosion. When they arrived, they found the homeowner shot. His 15-year-old son was taken into custody.
"I've never seen a cop car in this neighborhood and I've lived here for 25 years," neighbor Mike Gray said.
Sirens and red flashing lights sent Gray running to the corner to see what was happening in his quiet Minnetonka neighborhood.
"Nothing like this happens in this neighborhood. I find it shocking with this family," Gray said.
According to police, they were called to the home in the 5400 hundred block of Byscane Way, first on reports of an explosion. When they got there, they realized it was a weapon that was discharged and someone was shot.
"We ultimately found an adult man had been shot and a 15-year-old was taken into custody," Cpt. Scott Boerboom said.
Police said the 15-year-old was arrested in the driveway of the home. They did find a gun at the scene. Police said other family members were inside the home when the shooting happened.
Now, investigators are asking tough questions and trying to determine if this shooting was intentional or accidental.
"I just find that so shocking because he's a good guy and his kids are fun-loving kids. It's just a good family," Gray said.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is helping with the investigation. The county attorney has until Wednesday afternoon to press charges against the 15-year-old, or let him go. Minnetonka police said there have never been called to the house for a domestic dispute or for any altercation involving family members.
Investigators said they will continue working to determine how this happened and why.
