Minnesotans see northern lights Friday night

MINNEAPOLIS -- Clear skies overnight gave Minnesotans the chance to see the northern lights on Friday.

That's because overnight, a minor geomagnetic storm turned into a moderate geomagnetic storm. It meant the northern lights were possible as far as southern Minnesota.

Some people, like Heidi Hart, were able to snap a photo of the lights. Hart took a picture of the lights on the dock of the Pine River Dam in Pine River around 11:30 p.m.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. They usually display in a greenish color, although shades of red, yellow and blue are also possible.
