Minnesota Zoo Welcomes 3 Baby Snow Monkeys
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Zoo is welcoming three new additions to their habitats: three baby snow monkeys.
The babies were born April 17, April 20 and May 1 to mothers Yuki, Shumei and Yumoto.
At birth, snow monkeys weigh roughly one pound, but within a few weeks grow to be within the 15 – 25 pound range.
The babies are all staying close to their mothers, but have begun to venture out on their own a little bit.
Snow monkeys, also called Japanese macaques, are considered to be a threatened species by the U.S. Fire and Wildlife Service. They are medium primates with reddish-colored faces and long, dense gray fur. They originate in Japan and spend their time both on the ground and in trees.
None of the monkeys have been named and the sex of each is still unknown.
The baby snow monkeys will make their public debut Tuesday, just in time for Mother's Day.
