MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesotans seeking the best driving experience can rest east, as a new ranking places the state among the top five best in the nation.

Minnesota comes in with the fifth best state in the U.S. with the best conditions for drivers, according to a study by Bankrate.

The rankings were based on average commute times and the cost of gas, repairs and insurance.

Another major factor in the rankings were the number of deadly crashes and car thefts in each state.

While we may be one of the best states, the average Minnesotan still spends about $150 on insurance and $782 on gas each year, although that falls below the national average of more than $900.

For those in competition with our neighbor to the east, don't get excited. Wisconsin was also in the top five, just ahead of Minnesota. It tallied a better commute time.

Among the worst states were Louisiana, California, and Texas.
