Minnesota State Sen. Torrey Westrom injured in snowmobile crash

UPDATE: Sen. Westrom discussed his injuries in a Facebook post one week after his snowmobile crash on March 12. What follows is a revised version of the original story.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Minn. – A Minnesota State Senator is still recovering after suffering injuries in a snowmobile crash last weekend.

Sen. Torrey Westrom, R-Alexandria, was riding on a snowmobile on Lake Ida on March 12, when the 13-year-old driver hit a snowdrift, causing the senator to fall off, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Westrom, who is blind, was taken to the hospital by a snowmobile rescue sled. The 13-year-old driver was not hurt.

One week after the crash, Westrom took to his Facebook page to give an update on his condition.

Westrom says he suffered three broken ribs, and is now recovering in St. Paul and working remotely.

"I really appreciate the thoughts and prayers from so many and look forward to returning to the Capitol soon," Westrom said.
