Minnesota Girl Scout Camp Permanently Closes Due To Flood Damage

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A southern Minnesota Girl Scout camp is closing after more than 40 years.

Past and current scouts gathered in Houston to say their final farewell this weekend. Camp Whispering Hills first opened in 1972.

Flooding from two years ago damaged the campgrounds. The women who ran the camp said it would have cost more than a million dollars to make the camp safe for visitors.

"Luckily, we're going to keep it in the public domain, which we're excited about," said Tish Bolger, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Minnesota & Wisconsin River Valleys. "So it will be used by other people moving forward, and keep all of its natural beauty."

Sunday's decommissioning ceremony also included the opening of a time capsule found on camp grounds, as well as a display of camp memorabilia.
