Minnesota Ranked As 2nd Most Charitable State In The U.S.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesota is one of the most charitable states in the country, according to a new list that gives the Land of 10,000 Lakes high marks in volunteering and charitable giving.

The financial website WalletHub released Monday its 2016 Most Charitable States report, placing Minnesota in the No. 2 spot, just behind the particularly altruistic Utah.

According to the report, Minnesota ranked third when it came to volunteer rate, and second in the percentage of the population who claim to have donated time.

When ranking states, WalletHub says it looked at a number of factors that fell into two categories: "volunteering and service" and "charitable giving."

Minnesota ranked fifth in the "volunteering and service" spread and third in the "charitable giving" lineup. When both metrics were combined, it was enough for Minnesota to earn the No. 2 spot on the overall charitable list.

Meanwhile, Utah ranked No. 1 in both the "volunteering and service" and "charitable giving" categories. The Beehive State is certainly the one to beat (or emulate).

As for other notably charitable Midwestern states, North Dakota and Wisconsin ranked in WalletHub's top 10.

The five least charitable states on the list were Hawaii, Nevada, Texas, California and Arizona.

As a country, the U.S. is the second-most charitable nation in the world, according to the Charities Aid Foundation. The No. 1 honor goes to Myanmar.
