MPD Renews Commitment To Finding Terrell Mayes' Killer; Unveil Cold Case Team
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Four years ago, the shooting death of a Twin Cities toddler shocked the community and left police with a difficult case. Investigators are still looking for the person who killed Terrell Mayes.
In 2011, the 3-year-old died inside his north Minneapolis home the day after Christmas. A stray bullet hit him as he ran for cover from gang-related gunfire outside his home.
Police never found his killer and want to reintroduce this case to the public.
Over the years, up to 20 investigators have worked the case and four detectives are still following up on leads. However, leads are dwindling and investigators need help from the community.
Police believe that with this case, someone has the information that could lead to an arrest but are refusing to come forward.
To reintroduce this case to the public, the Minneapolis Police Department is relying on videos as part of their newly-formed cold case squad.
The new program allows the police department to partner with the FBI and Hennepin County Attorney's office to review old crimes.
The Terrell Mayes video shows his mother and officers talking about the day he died and the impact it's had on them.
Since his death, Marsha Mayes, Terrell's mom, moved from their home on the 2600 block of Colfax Avenue North.
Marsha said she never thought she'd still be waiting for a killer to come forward four years after Terrell's death.
"I'm thankful they opened up the cold case, but, at the end of the day, there's also a trembling on the inside to let that slide out of my mouth that my child cold case now. So I'm a little mad at the community, I'm a little mad at the world," Marsha Mayes said.
There is still a $60,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in this case.
Police are taking a look at other cold cases.
