3-Year-Old Boy Injured In Minneapolis Carjacking; Suspect At Large
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police say a 3-year-old boy is safe after a carjacker stole a vehicle he was in Tuesday afternoon in north Minneapolis.
It began as a two-car crash on the 2600 block of Lyndale Avenue North just after 2:30 p.m. A Good Samaritan got out of his minivan to help those involved, only to see one of the drivers jump out of their vehicle and into his minivan -- with his son in the backseat.
The boy's father left his cellphone in the minivan, which police were able to use to track its location. At 3:17 p.m., officers found the minivan on the 2300 block of 14th Avenue South, about five miles southeast of the crash scene. The driver had fled, but the boy was still inside.
Police say the boy had suffered a minor injury, which they believe was likely due to the carjackers' erratic driving. The boy was brought to North Memorial Health hospital in Robbinsdale, where he were reunited with his family. Police say an AMBER Alert was in the works before the boy was found.
The carjacker-turned kidnapper is still at large, but police say they have a good idea of the suspect's identity, and investigators are making "great headway" in the search effort. Police also say they found evidence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle that the suspect abandoned in the initial crash.
