Minn. House Approves Gun Ban For Domestic Abusers
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota House has passed a bill banning gun possession by people convicted of certain abuse crimes or subject to restraining orders.
The bipartisan measure marks a rare instance where lawmakers appear ready to tighten gun restrictions.
Democratic Rep. Dan Schoen says he hopes his proposal will save lives.
Those convicted of child or domestic abuse must give their firearms to a person or an entity legally allowed to receive them within three days.
The bill is backed by prominent gun-rights defender Tony Cornish, a Republican legislator. He says it protects gun owners' rights and those in worrisome domestic environments.
Matt Swenson, a spokesman for Gov. Mark Dayton, says the governor will review the bill's final language before taking a stance.
The Senate version of the bill awaits floor action.
