Metro Transit: Pedestrian Struck, Killed By LRT

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a light rail train in Minneapolis Sunday evening, according to Metro Transit.

Metro Transit's John Siqveland says a southbound light rail train struck the pedestrian near 42nd Street East and Hiawatha Avenue around 6 p.m. The train was carrying passengers.

At the time of the incident, the gate arms controlling the intersection were in the lowered position. The train came to a stop a short distance beyond the intersection after striking the man.

Metro Transit Police will investigate the incident. The train's operator is being tested for drugs and alcohol, which is routine.

Bus service is now temporarily replacing LRT traffic from the Franklin Avenue Station to Fort Snelling.

This is the 10th fatal accident on the light rail line since it began operating in June 2004.
