Metro Green Line Test Train Collides With Car

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- No one was seriously injured Sunday night after a Metro Transit Green Line test train collided with a vehicle, according to authorities.

The accident happened around 10:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Portland Avenue and South 5th Street in downtown Minneapolis.

According to John Siqveland, public relations manager at Metro Transit, the woman driving the car was evaluated on scene and released. The rail operator did not suffer any injuries.

The test train was headed northbound towards Target Field when it collided with the car, which was southbound on Portland. Metro Transit police are investigating the incident.

The train suffered minor damage and the vehicle was towed from the scene, Siqveland said.

The Metro Transit Green Line is less than a week away from taking passengers between St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Siqveland said they expect to be running on schedule -- a total trip time of 48 minutes from Union Depot to Target Field -- after they settle into regular operations.

"Recent testing is going very well and runs are increasingly becoming more consistent -- that will continue to be the focus of training through the week," he said.
