Man fatally shot after fight inside Minneapolis deli near U of M, police say

Stats show serious crimes have fallen in Minneapolis over the past year

MINNEAPOLIS — A 40-year-old man is dead after a shooting early Saturday morning outside of a Minneapolis deli.

Police say it happened at about 3:45 a.m. on University Avenue Southeast near Sixth Street Southeast.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. He died about 45 minutes later at HCMC.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim Sunday as 40-year-old Kenneth Maurice Johnson, from Wayne, Michigan. His cause of death is listed as a gunshot wound to the torso.

Police say Johnson was shot after a "physical altercation" inside Mr. Santana, a deli and convenience store with late-night hours that's popular with University of Minnesota students in the area.
