Man Charged For Assaulting Officer During Arrest In Brooklyn Park
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 25-year-old man is accused of assaulting a Brooklyn Park police officer during an arrest early Sunday morning, according to charges filed in Hennepin County Court.
Lance Cedric Carr has been charged with first-degree assault in connection with the severe beating of a police officer. He is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
According to the charges, Brooklyn Park police were called early Sunday to a townhouse complex on the 9600 block of Scott Lane North to check on a complaint of loud noise coming from a parked car. When the officer arrived, he learned that Carr, who was in the vehicle, had a warrant for his arrest.
The complaint states Carr stepped out of his vehicle and was in the process of being taken into custody. Carr was faced away from the officer, hands behind his back, when he suddenly turned around and threw a punch. The punch missed, but Carr grabbed the officer and they fell to the ground. Squad camera footage shows Carr landing several punches and elbows to the officer's head.
The complaint states Carr used a choke hold on the officer and appeared to go for his gun. The gun did discharge, but no one was hit by a bullet.
Other officers arrived and used a Taser on Carr to subdue him before he was taken into custody. The officer assaulted helped with the arrest before collapsing and being taken away from the scene by an ambulance.
The incident remains under investigation.
