Mall Of America, Again, Among Those Closing On Thanksgiving

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- For the second year in a row, the biggest mall in America will close its doors for Turkey Day.

The Mall of America in Bloomington is taking things a step further to push back against the holiday shopping frenzy. In addition to staying closed on Thanksgiving, the Mall of America will be offering holiday pay on Black Friday to the 1,200 people it directly employs.

The Mall of America began closing its doors on Thanksgiving last year, bucking the trend of big box stores opening early on Turkey Day.

Just down the road, The Burnsville Mall will also stay closed on Thanksgiving.

If you want to get your holiday shopping started while you are still digesting your turkey, don't worry.  Southdale Center, Ridgedale Center and Rosedale Center will allow their stores to be open on Thanksgiving evening.

The Mall of America will open at 5 a.m. on Black Friday, and will offer the first 200 guests in line an MOA gift card valued anywhere between $10 and $500.

The mall was already getting into the Christmas spirit Thursday, with crews assembling massive trees and decorations. Santa appear at Mall of America one week from today to officially kick off the holiday season.
