Local Music Tap: 4 Shows To See This Weekend (Mother's Day Edition)

From a jazz event celebrating women to a traditional symphony orchestra concert, this week's "4 Shows To See" has what you need for Mother's Day-related shows.

FRIDAY: Gear Daddies @ First Avenue, Minneapolis

So, the only non-Mother's day show happens to have "daddies" in one of the band names. Coincidence? Why yes!

Back on point: Twin Cities' staple Americana rocksters, the Gear Daddies, will be playing at the First Avenue Mainroom to start the weekend Friday.

Twin Cities acoustic band The Whiskies joins the bill. Doors open at 8 p.m. for the 18-plus show. Tickets are $25.

SATURDAY: PipJazz Presents Women of Jazz Band @ The Bedlam Mother's Day Weekend

Celebrate women by checking out PipJazz Presents Women of Jazz Band at the Bedlam Lowertown.

"Join us as we celebrate Women! Musicians, Poets, Songstress and Mothers...sending great vibes of Love," the event says.

Women of Jazz Band includes Pippi Ardennia and Kashimana Ahua on vocals, Marilyn Parker on saxophone, Faye Washington on flute, Margo Breivik on bass and Cymphony Jaxon on piano.

The show is from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

SUNDAY: Celebrating Women Composers @ Sundin Music Hall, St. Paul

Bring the whole family to Hamline University on Mother's Day and enjoy some great music by two French women composers!

Here's a description that'll do far better justice than I:

"In honor of Mother's Day, we present music by two wonderful French women composers! Germaine Tailleferre's light and breezy Sonate Champêtre draws on melodies from one of her own comic operas, and Louise Farrenc's virtuosic and rich Trio for violin, cello, and piano goes right to the heart of 19th century Romanticism. 'Song of the Lark' blogger Emily Hogstad joins Susan Billmeyer on stage during intermission and will talk about challenges faced by women composers."

The concert is at the university's Sundin Music Hall. Tickets range from $10 to $25. The show begins at 3 p.m.

SUNDAY: St Paul Civic Symphony Mother's Day Concert

It's a great tradition and it's absolutely free! On Sunday at 1 p.m., the Saint Paul Civic Symphony will be playing the classics at Landmark Center's Cortile atrium.

It's advised to arrive early, because seats fill up quickly!
