Lakeville Man Not Fighting Extradition In 31-Year-Old Murder Case

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Lakeville, Minn. man isn't fighting efforts to extradite him to Texas after being arrested in connection with a 31-year-old murder case.

Robert Archie Otteson, 53, faces intentional murder charges in connection with a 1983 murder that occurred in Denton Co., TX.

According to police, officers from the Lakeville Police Department, Texas Rangers and Denton County deputies went to a Lakeville resident Tuesday afternoon.

Upon their arrival, they found Otteson, who had a warrant out for his arrest in Denton Co. for murder, intentional cause of death, from 1983.

According to the warrant, Otteson stabbed an adult male 35 times.

Otteson stabbed the man in the chest, neck, face, hands and back, killing him.

He then fled the state in the victim's car.

The complaint states that blood and other samples were taken from the scene, but the case remained unsolved for many years.

In 2010, the case was reopened when a new Lieutenant was assigned to the case, Lte. Smith.

Smith sent the stored evidence to be studied at University of North Texas Health Science Lab.

According to the complaint, roughly a year later the university found the victim's profile from the evidence, but noted there was another unknown male whose bodily fluids were detected in the evidence.

Two years later, in 2013, Lte. Smith found Otteson's fingerprints matches the ones at the scene.

Police located Otteson as living in Lakeville, Minn.

Officials then obtained a sample of Otteson's DNA to compare to that found at the scene.

According to the criminal complaint the DNA was a match.

Otteson was indicted for murder in Denton Co., TX. If convicted he could face life without parole.

Otterson waived extradition Thursday afternoon and is being held without bail.

He is set for review at 11 a.m. Aug. 22 in Hastings, Minn.
