3 Men Charged In Lake Street Shotgun Murder

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Three men were charged with second-degree murder Monday in the shooting death of a man during a robbery on Lake Street, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Mashawn Moore, 18, Marshawn Winston, 21, and Lee Holden, also known as John Davis, 50, were each charged with the murder of 52-year-old James Salter. The three men were arrested on July 9.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to Lake Street and Fifth Avenue South around 5 a.m. July 7. Officers found Salter dead of a shotgun blast to the chest and neck.

The attorney's office said Moore, Winston and Holden decided they were going to rob a man who Winston and Holden had a past conflict with. When they could not find that man, they came upon Salter and decided to rob him instead. Moore exited the car and told Salter to hand over his money.

According to the criminal complaint, Moore shot Salter because he was moving too slow.

Winston then searched Salter's pockets for money, the attorney's office said. The complaint states the men then drove to McDonald's. Video from the restaurant confirms they were there together.

The three men are scheduled to make their first court appearance Tuesday. The county attorney's office is seeking bail of $1 million for each of them.
