Klobuchar Co-Introduces Another Bill To Fight Opioid Addiction
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Last month, President Barack Obama signed the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act into law, which was co-introduced by Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
The legislation encourages states and local communities to use proven strategies in the fight against addiction.
Klobuchar has now also co-introduced another bill, the Prescription Drug Monitoring Act. This legislation would require doctors to use prescription drug monitoring programs before prescribing painkillers.
"Yes, it's some extra work, [doctors] will have to enter in these prescriptions," Klobuchar said at a press conference. "But there's absolutely no way to monitor when people are going around, going to different doctors."
The senator said one doctor claimed to have a patient who obtained 108 different prescriptions from 85 different doctors in the Upper Midwest.
Klobuchar also recently co-introduced the Budgeting for Opioid Addiction Treatment Act, which would create a permanent funding stream for substance abuse treatment.
