Jury Selection Begins In Trial For Fatal Burnsville Bar Shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Jury selection has begun in the trial of a man accused of shooting another man to death at a Burnsville bar.
Shavelle Chavez-Nelson, 32, is accused in the death of Palagor Jobi, who was shot in September 2013 during a fight in the parking lot of the bar. He was 23 years old.
That night was also the last time 20-year-old University of Minnesota student Anarae Schunk was seen. Schunk went to the bar with Chavez-Nelson, her ex-boyfriend, and Chavez-Nelson's then current girlfriend.
Schunk's body was found 10 days later in a ditch in rural Rice County.
Jury selection in Jobi's death began on Monday. According to reports, Chavez-Nelson fired his public defenders last week.
His request to delay the start of court proceedings was denied by the district judge, reports say.
Chavez-Nelson is charged with first-degree murder in Jobi's death.
Also, Chavez-Nelson, 32, and Ashley Conrade, 24, both face first-degree murder charges in the death of Anarae Schunk, who was stabbed 22 times.
Conrade is accused of helping Chavez-Nelson dispose of Schunk's body. Investigators found several items of physical evidence at Concorde's home that pointed to Schunk's stabbing death at the scene
The trial for Schunk's murder is scheduled to begin next May.
