Judge Orders Terror Suspect To Remain In Custody
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One of the seven men who are accused of trying to join ISIS has been ordered to stay in custody.
U.S. District Judge Michael Davis ruled Monday that Abdullahi Yusuf of Inver Grove Heights will remain in custody of the U.S. Marshal.
In November 2014, Yusuf was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to ISIL. On February 6, 2015, Yusuf plead guilty to the charges.
Prior to his sentencing, Davis allowed Yusuf to remain at the RS Eden halfway house. Yusuf was ordered back into custody after a random search on April 23 found a box cutter under his bed.
Yusuf denied knowledge of the box cutter, but was ordered into custody on April 28.
Defense attorneys for some of the suspects were arguing that due to their clean criminal records up to this point, the seven men should be released from custody. Also, the options for halfway housing or home supervision are thought to be an attempt to de-radicalize the suspects.
Yusuf will remain in custody until the hearings. The government will have until July 7 to respond to the other men charged. On July 8, a judge's hearing would be scheduled.
