I-94 & I-90 To See Extra Patrols This Weekend
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- Drivers in 15 states – including Minnesota -- are being asked to take part in a challenge on Interstate 90 and 94.
If you're driving on the two interstates from Aug. 1 through Aug. 4, expect to see extra patrols. It's called the "I-90/94 Challenge."
The challenge covers more than 5,600 miles between Washington state and New York. The challenge will use education, awareness and strict enforcement to try to save lives and remind motorists to drive safely.
"Law enforcement will be looking for the usual violations. Focusing specifically on seat belts, speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, motorcycle violations and unsafe behavior and equipment surrounding commercial vehicles," Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol said.
The state patrol says during those four days there's an average of more than 520 crashes on the interstates. They average three deadly crashes as well.
The challenge was initiated by the Minnesota State Patrol to help the International Association of Chiefs of Police reach its goal this year of reducing traffic fatalities by 15 percent.
