St. Paul Elementary Students Get Up Close With Stanley Cup

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- The more than 400 children at Horace Mann Elementary school in St. Paul began chanting for their favorite Minnesota sports team before the guest of honor arrived.

And then it happened -- Lord Stanley's Cup was walked into the school's gymnasium.

"It's pretty exciting to see like the actual trophy and stuff," said student Ellie Pavlis.

One of four Stanley Cup handlers was there to answer questions.

Decked out in their Wild gear, these super fans in training could not contain themselves.

For Vincent Castillo, seeing the Stanley Cup up close is something he will never forget.

"I think it's more suprising that it's on my birthday," Castillo said. "And plus I thought I would never see a world championship trophy too."

This is just one way the Wild supports Horace Mann.

Members of the Wild's front office work with the students as part of its buddy program.

"28 students from my classroom in September meet their Wild buddy that they'll have, that will come and visit them every week for the remainder of the school year," Amy Kortuem, 4th grade teacher, said.

These kids hope the Wild will get it together to put one in the win column Monday night.

They're sending nothing but good vibes to their favorite players. Some even have predictions of how the Wild will take game three.

"They're going to get their top scorers back, so they're going to win," said student Leo Klein.
