Police: Woman Dies After Easter Morning Shooting
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Instead of sharing an Easter meal with a young St. Paul woman, friends and family are grieving together.
Family says 19-year-old of Samirria White was killed by her boyfriend at an apartment on Pierce Butler Route. St. Paul police arrested Dimitri Harrell Sunday morning. The couple has a 3-month-old girl.
Sgt. Paul Paulos of St. Paul Police said early Sunday the incident was likely a domestic situation.
"We know an argument took place, that's what we know right now," Paolos said.
St. Paul officers say after that, around 3:30 a.m., a young woman was shot in an apartment and the man she knew well was arrested. Several family and friends were nearby, but White's mother had left earlier that day to vacation in Florida.
She talked to WCCO as she awaits a flight home. "She's like a mother hen and they took my baby, he took her," Shanta White said.
Shanta said the young couple had been on the rocks recently but lived together with their baby,
"Sometimes you gotta let him go but Samirria wants to have her family," Shanta White said.
"I don't even know what would've made him snap like that, why would he do something like that," Samirria's cousin, Kenta Cummings, said.
He said he was awoken by dozens of phone calls. Word had spread that the young woman who loved being a mom and held down two childcare jobs would be around no more.
"This was her first Easter with her baby, she was going to cook Easter dinner," Cummings said.
And so they stood as family and friends who'd intended a holiday gathering, but not like this.
The baby is with an aunt now, and Samirria's mother will be back home Monday. She said her daughter was a motivator and had much planned for her life.
Friends plan to hold a vigil Monday.
