High Lake Superior Level Prompts Soo Gate Opening
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — The brimming water level on Lake Superior has led a Canadian-U.S. regulatory board to increase the outflow through gates on the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie.
The International Lake Superior Board of Control says the flow setting of the control structure at the head of the St. Marys Rapids will increase Wednesday, and it warms anglers to beware of changing flow and water levels.
The board says rising river water will flood some low-lying areas of Whitefish Island, submerging and damaging some recreational trails and facilities.
The board operates under the authority of the International Joint Commission.
It says recent rains have raised Lake Superior 6.3 inches above average. The level on downstream lakes Michigan and Huron is 5.5 inches below average.
