Hastings Community Tries For Record ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) -- The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took center stage in Hastings on Sunday.

People gathered at Veterans Park to break the world record for largest Ice Bucket Challenge. Unfortunately, the group did not break the record, but they did manage to raise $14,000 for ALS research.

The event was in honor of long-time Hastings resident Lucy Hoffman, who was diagnosed with ALS in March.

"We wanted a challenge this year because we knew there was going to be some interest again. The association had renewed the challenge but we knew we needed to build some intrigue so we went after the record," Carol Hoffman, Lucy's daughter, said.

A group in China broke the record last year with 782 people. About 400 people turned out in Hastings today.

All the proceeds from Sunday's event will benefit the ALS Association of Minnesota.
