Guest Pass: Guthrie Theater's Endless Bridge

We all love living in the Twin Cites, right? But it's easy to fall into a rut when you're entertaining visitors. We know there's plenty to explore in the Twin Cities -- other than a few restaurants and Mall of America. So we asked our viewers to help uncover it all in a new segment we're calling Guest Pass.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO)
-- Completed in June of 2006, the gravity defying structure at the Guthrie Theater is architect Jean Nouvel's signature feature.

"It's elevated 55 feet up in the air, sticking out from the building more than 175 feet to provide really great views of the river and the city beyond," said Guthrie's Lana Aylesworth.

"If you're standing down on level one, you hardly notice that we're even on the Mississippi River, so he really wanted to bring it above tree line, so that every time you come up that escalator and walk out on to the Endless Bridge, you're faced with Minneapolis at it's finest."

Which means, you'll want to get your camera ready. Before you even get outside, you're faced with dozens of photo ops.

"The cut-outs that you see are almost like unique postcards. Snapshots of the city," Aylesworth said.

The mirror-lined windows frame views of Minneapolis, new and old.

"I have a very favorite window, just behind us here, no matter where you're standing everyone can find a perfect view of the gold medal flour sign. Perfectly framed," she said.

But the best views are just beyond the blue doors.

"The Stone Arch Bridge, obviously very iconic, also St. Anthony Falls, essentially where the city of Minneapolis began," Aylesworth said. "So you're looking at our history, the northeast, St. Anthony Main area, where the city really sprang up around the mill industry, and then bringing it back to this side of the Mississippi and into downtown."

Another great view of the city, inside the Guthrie is up on their ninth floor -- the Dowling Studio Lobby, which has that amber hued windows.
