Gov. Mark Dayton To Have Back Surgery Monday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Gov. Mark Dayton's office said Sunday that he will undergo elective lower back surgery on Monday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Officials say it's a similar procedure to one Dayton had done three years ago, which fused two vertebrae in his lower back and is beneficial to improving the strength and the stability in his legs.  Gov. Dayton said he expects similar improvements after Monday's surgery.

"I have the utmost confidence in the medical professionals at Mayo," Gov. Dayton said in a statement. "I want to assure everyone that this procedure will not diminish either my capacity to fulfill my duties as Governor, or my passion for serving the people of Minnesota. I look forward to a full recovery, as I experienced before."

Officials say he will have surgery at 7:30 a.m. Monday and it's expected to take two to three hours. He expects to resume his regular schedule after about a week.
