Gophers Sweep Penn State To Win Big Ten Title
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of Minnesota men's hockey team beat Penn State 6-2 Saturday night at Mariucci to complete a weekend sweep of the Nittany Lions.
The win, coupled with Michigan State's win over Michigan, let the Gophers earn their second straight Big Ten Conference regular season title. Minnesota has now won four straight regular season conference championships.
Minnesota will be the No. 1 seed and get a first-round bye for this week's Big Ten Tournament in Michigan. The Gophers will face the winner of Penn State/Ohio State Friday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
Hudson Fasching (two goals, two assists), Mike Reilly (two assists) and Kyle Rau (two goals) tallied multi-point games for the second straight game. Penn State scored first in the contest, but Seth Ambroz and Fasching scored 17 seconds apart to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead after the first intermission.
Minnesota scored four second-period goals to pull away for the win.
Adam Wilcox made 29 saves in net to earn his 71st career victory.
