Gophers Get All 3 Big Ten Stars After Weekend Sweep

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- After a weekend sweep of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota men's hockey team swept all three awards for the Stars of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

The Gophers beat the Badgers 4-0 and 9-2 to improve to 8-2 in Big Ten play. Michael Brodzinski earned the league's First Star of the Week, Hudson Fasching was named the Second Star of the Week and Eric Schierhorn was named the Third Star of the Week.

Brodzinski got his first career hat trick in Saturday's victory, with all three goals in the third period. He also had an assist in Friday night's win. It's his third career award and second this season.

Fasching led the Big Ten with five points in the weekend series, scoring two goals and adding three assist. He scored 12 seconds into the game in Friday night's win and added a goal and an assist on Saturday. Fasching has had multiple point games in five of the Gophers' last six contests. It's his six career award and second this year.

Schierhorn shut out the Badgers Friday night and had a .964 save percentage for the weekend series and a goals against average of 1.0. He recorded 29 saves in Friday's shutout and had 25 saves on Saturday. It's his third career award.

The Gophers host the Northstar College Cup at Xcel Energy Center this weekend with Bemidji State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State University, Mankato.
