Franken: Report Is Reminder Torture 'Immoral'
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — U.S. Sen. Al Franken says a report showing the U.S. brutalized scores of terror suspects after the Sept. 11 attacks is a reminder that torture is immoral.
Franken reacted Tuesday to the Senate Intelligence Committee report accusing the CIA of misleading political leaders about what it was doing with its interrogation tactics.
In a statement, Franken calls the report "a sobering reminder that torture is immoral, and it's not who we are."
But the Minnesota Democrat says not only is torture wrong, it's also ineffective. He says the report shows the CIA's tactics were not effective in producing the kind of accurate intelligence needed for national security.
Franken concludes that the CIA "has not been honest with Congress or the public."
